Big Jelly: A Bold Display Font for Creative Projects

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to figure out how to make the logo stand out. The client wanted something fun, approachable, and a little quirky—perfect for a small café that serves handmade pastries and artisanal coffee. That’s when I pulled out Big Jelly, a chunky lettered and cool display font that immediately caught my eye.

Big Jelly has a playful yet confident personality. Its thick, rounded letters give it a friendly vibe, while the slight irregularity in the strokes adds a sense of character. It’s not too rigid or formal, which makes it ideal for brands that want to feel more personal and less corporate. The font feels like it was designed with a smile, and that’s exactly what I needed for this project.

As I started testing Big Jelly on different mockups, I noticed how well it worked in various design contexts. On a logo draft, it added a visual punch without overwhelming the other elements. On a packaging design, it made the product labels pop, especially when paired with a simple sans serif for the supporting text. The font’s boldness made it perfect for headlines and titles, but I also found that it could work as a subtle accent in smaller text if used carefully.

One of the first things I did was create a few variations of the logo using Big Jelly. I experimented with different weights and spacing to see how it would look on a shop sign, business card, and social media graphic. What stood out was how consistent the font felt across different sizes and mediums. Whether it was a large banner or a tiny label sticker, Big Jelly maintained its charm and clarity.

Readability was another important factor. While Big Jelly is a display font and not meant for long blocks of text, it still held up well in short-form applications. I tested it on a homepage hero section and found that it worked surprisingly well as a headline. The thick letters made it easy to read from a distance, which is essential for a café’s signage and marketing materials.

When working with clients, I always recommend testing a font before committing to it. Big Jelly is no exception. I created a quick mockup with different color schemes and background textures to see how it interacted with other design elements. This helped me understand how the font would perform in real-world scenarios, such as a printed menu or a digital ad.

Pairing Big Jelly with other fonts was another interesting part of the process. I tried it with a classic serif font for a more traditional feel and with a modern sans serif for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both combinations worked well, depending on the brand’s tone. The key was to use Big Jelly as a focal point rather than a background element, allowing it to shine where it matters most.

Another thing I considered was the font’s versatility. Big Jelly includes multiple styles and alternates, which gave me more options to play with. I found that using different ligatures and character variations helped add a unique touch to the design without making it look cluttered. It also made the font more adaptable for different projects, whether it was a book cover, a poster, or a website header.

For a branding project, consistency is everything. Big Jelly helped maintain a cohesive look across all materials. From the café’s logo to the packaging and social media graphics, the font provided a clear visual identity that aligned with the brand’s personality. It also made it easier for the client to recognize and remember the brand, which is crucial for building customer loyalty.

When it comes to commercial use, I checked the licensing details to make sure everything was covered. Big Jelly’s commercial font license allowed me to use it across all design assets, including print and digital formats. This gave me peace of mind knowing that the client could use the font without any legal issues.

Overall, Big Jelly proved to be a valuable addition to my design toolkit. It brought a fresh, energetic feel to the project and helped create a brand identity that felt both professional and approachable. Whether you’re working on a café, a boutique, or a creative studio, Big Jelly can add that extra flair to your design work.

For designers looking for a display font that’s both fun and functional, Big Jelly is definitely worth considering. It’s a great example of how typography can influence the overall feel of a brand, and how a single font can make a big difference in the final result.

After all, good design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating something that resonates with the audience. And with Big Jelly, that connection feels a little more playful and a lot more memorable.
